Moto2: Remy Gardner Tops Free Practice Three as Bezzecchi Goes to Q1
By Jack Hammersley
Remy Gardner showed his pace, setting a new lap record of a 1:42.728, two tenths faster than Luca Marini.
Luca Marini focused solely on race pace after putting in a lightning lap yesterday. The Italian was lapping consistent 1:43’s and looks in fine form and a favourite for the race win, putting himself in the ideal position to fight for the title.
Enea Bastianini needs a finish of fourth place to secure himself of the championship, but the Italian doesn’t want to win the title by picking up points, he wants to win it in style with a win. Enea did put a lap time good enough to put him in third place overall, but ran through a yellow flag zone, cancelling his lap and putting him in ninth place. Enea’s race pace this season has always been robust, but his qualifying has let him down. Can Enea repeat his Free Practice Three performance in Q2 to get his first front-row start since Misano?
Hector Garzo continues his fine form from Valencia, finishing in third place in the combined standings. The Flexbox HP40 Pons team have made a significant step since Aragon with both of their riders being more competitive and competing for the podium positions. The Spaniard has yet to get a pole position in his career, can he change that in Q2?
Sam Lowes was struggling with his hand, being very inconsistent during his runs, and the session ended in a disaster with the Brit losing the front at turn 13. Luckily for Sam, he put in a time good enough on Friday to get into Q2. Can Sam get over his injury to get on the front-row for the last round of the season?
It’s not going to plan for SKY VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi as the Italian was unable to set a lap time quick enough to get into Q2, finishing in 15th position. Marco is going to have to find a solution to his problems as he was running off track a few time during the session. Can Marco use Q1 to improve the bike and be able to fight for the front-row positions to give himself the best chance of the much-needed victory?
