Izan Guevara Takes His Second Victory Of 2022 In Catalunya.
Leopard Racing’s Dennis Foggia was on pole position at The Gran Premi Monster Energy De Catalunya, this was Foggia’s second pole position of the 2022 Moto3 championship so far. Joining Foggia on the front row was Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Deniz Oncu in second place, with Valresa GASGAS Aspar Team’s Izan Guevara in third place.
Dennis Foggia got the perfect start and lead the Moto3 riders into turn one. Foggia held on to the lead, Izan Guavara was in second place, Sergio Garcia was in third place. Britain’s Scott Ogden was in 13th place.
With 19 laps to go Tatsuki Suzuki made his way up to third place, the Leopard rider was right on the back wheel of Guevara; Suzuki made the pass for second place on the start finish straight. Suzuki then went on to take the lead pushing his team-mate back to fourth place.
A lap later Guevara took first place with Garcia making it through to second. Deniz Oncu was in sixth place, Jaume Masia was in eighth place. The front group consisted of 21 riders! Scott Ogden was dropping down the order and was in 21st place.
Suzuki re-took the lead whilst Foggia was being pushed down the order, disaster struck for the Italian Foggia as he had to pull off the track due to his chain falling off, that’s two DNF’s in a row for the championship favorite.
13 laps remained to the race, the front group consisted of 20 riders, Suzuki was leading, Oncu was in second place with Garcia in third place. Three riders were involved in an incident at turn 10, Dani Holgado, Ryusei Yamanaka and David Salvador; bringing the front group down to seven riders.
Oncu slipped into the lead for the first time during the race after 11 laps,16-year-old David Munoz got into third place and was pushing to take the lead. The front group now consisted of 11 riders.
With nine laps to go Adrian Fernandez took a turn in leading the pack of 11 riders, Suzuki was down in sixth place. It was all-change a few corners later and Suzuki made his way to first place followed by Oncu in second place. Migno pulled into the pits with seven laps remaining in the race, Scott Ogden was in a point scoring position in 15th place.
Guevara took the lead, the Spaniard had six tenths of a second lead to second place rider Garcia; with just four laps remaining. Toba unfortunately crashed out at turn 10 whilst he was in the front group of riders.
Izan Guevara took the victory; his second victory of 2022 and his fourth podium finish, the battle for second was hard fought! Munoz got a well deserved second place, it was only the Spaniard’s second ever Moto3 race, Suzuki finished in third place, Garcia had to settle for fourth place.
Garcia now leads the championship by 16 points from his team-mate Guevara. Next up on the Moto3 calendar is The Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland on 19th June.
