BSB: Mikey Hardie Takes Cup Win with Heroic Last Lap Charge.
By Dawn Hammersley
MIKEY Hardie saved his best until last as he took the Quattro Group British Supersport HEL Performance Cup win in today’s Sprint race at Cadwell Park.
It was to prove a successful end to the day for the whole ROKiT Rookies team, after mechanics worked hard to repair two machines after two crashed during qualifying.
It had been a dramatic start to the day, as both Joe Farragher and Adam Brown crashed out in separate incidents during this morning’s qualifying session. Both were thankfully unhurt in their offs, but they left their crews with some hard work to do before the start of the race, just four hours later.
Bikes rebuilt and riders checked out to ensure no injuries, the ROKiT Rookies lined up on the grid for the 12-lap dash with Hardie starting second in the Cup class, with Brown eighth and Farragher 10th.
Despite the threat of rain, the track remained dry as the race began and Hardie quickly found a good rhythm as he set off chasing the rider ahead in class. In the closing laps, he started to take big chunks out of the lead, closing to 0.157secs as they headed into the final lap.
Hardie kept the pressure on and as they rounded the final corner and started their push to the flag, he put his head down and outdragged his rival across the line, taking the well-deserved Cup win by 0.015secs to bank another 25 points.
Brown and Farragher, meanwhile, also enjoyed strong races as they hit the track on newly rebuilt bikes which didn’t let them down.
Both managed to make solid progress and fight their way through the field, Brown taking sixth in the Cup at the flag as Farragher crossed the line eighth.
