eSports: First Ever Bennetts British Superbike and MotoAmerica Championships Available On a Video Game!
By Dawn Hammersley
After years of waiting BSB and MotoAmerica fans can now play as their favourite riders around their favourite tracks.
Ride 5 is a motorcycle racing simulation videogame on consoles (Xbox and Playstation) by Milestone Italy s.r.l. The game has a rather rudimentary sticker creator where users can use basic shapes to recreate logos, numbers and designs and apply them onto their chosen bike. Players do this to try to recreate real liveries of their favourite racers and Shaun Botham shares the work of his and others on the Instagram page Ride5Liveries.
This allows fans to download and use their favourite bikes, where they may not have been featured in a videogame before. Another feature on Ride 5 is Race Creator, allowing you to build fantasy championships and events and share them for other players to enjoy. This is where you can find a downloadable championship called “Official BSB ’24”, for the first time ever bringing BSB to console gaming. As well as MotoAmerica which was released on Thanksgiving 2024 titled “MotoAmerica 2024”.
Shaun Botham, who’s username is i_Crixus- makes the majority of the liveries featured on the Instagram channel. He has also worked with Sean Dobie of SDPG to bring out a BSB eSports league that was a great success and was attended by BSB rider Jaimie van Sikkelerus. There are a bunch of other artists who have made excellent liveries, including: FooXz_15, Orange Skunk, AdamBGP, Paluzzu 46, EvillPhill_UK, Rmoreland99, MAPO78 and man_alice87 who feature more regularly.
When we asked Shaun why he wanted to do a BSB championship he said: “I just wanted BSB in a video game and Ride 5 gave me the tools to try to make it.
The search functionality in Ride has never been fantastic and in previous versions, I have always struggled to find the exact replica I wanted to download. I wished there was a way to just see the good replicas and how to download them. This was the motivation to create this gallery and give back to the community a way to find the best bikes and a reason to come back and play more.
Liveries take hours of work and there are people out there putting in loads of effort to make these. This is special, this is art we can use. So I wanted a way to promote what they did and get eyes on it. Including the riders that actually race those bikes.
Lastly, and realistically, will a British Supersport racer or a young rider in the British Talent Cup expect to be in a modern console video game? Probably not. But we tried to make it possible and have done a great job so far”.
Each livery can take a lot of hours to complete, depending on how many stickers need to be hand crafted. Each sponsor, each number and pattern is created in the Sticker Editor and then using the Livery Editor are placed and shaped to best match the real livery and trying to stick within the 2,000 layers limit that the game has. On top of this, the same method is applied to the suit and helmets to make a close to life representation. This is all pulled together into a grid of 20 riders, tracks are then selected and we have a game within a game.
But this is just one part of what Ride5Liveries has offered to the motorcycle eSports racing community. The gallery continues to grow with now over 300 replicas to download and use from MotoGP, World Superbike, BSB, Road Racing, British Supersport, British Superstock and more. They have sponsored numerous eSports events through SDPG and WRLD (the leading Ride PC league) to promote Ride and the community.
