Moto 2: Senna Agius takes stunning first Moto2 victory in Silverstone thriller

Agius secures first victory ahead of Moreira and Alonso, as Canet loses out in final corner
Moto2 arrived at Silverstone earlier than usual for the 2025 Tissot Grand Prix of the United Kingdom in more ways than one. The whole event has taken place earlier in the year – but will return to the usual August slot for 2026 – and while the schedule in the UK usually sees Moto2 moved to the final race of the day, this weekend they were up first.
Following heavy rain early in the morning, the track was dry by the time the Moto2 riders lined up on the grid for their seventh race of the season. The grid was headed by Aron Canet (Fantic Racing Lino Sonego) who had taken pole position on Saturday afternoon, ahead of Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP), with Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) taking third on the grid.
Rookie David Alonso (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team), Senna Agius (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP), and Marcos Ramirez (Onlyfans American Racing Team) lined up on row two, while Jake Dixon (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) lined up 13th after a challenging qualifying session for the British rider at home.
Gonzalez made a terrible start with a wheelie off the line that dropped him back to 11th place, while Canet took the lead from Moreira. There soon formed a lead group of five – Canet, Moreira, David Alonso, Agius, and Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2) – and they battled fiercely throughout the entire 17 lap race, and each of them took the race lead at some point during the thrilling race.
Following his poor start, Manuel Gonzalez was making steady progress back through the field, but contact with Barry Baltus (Fantic Racing Lino Sonego) saw both riders go down at turn 6 early in the race.
Home hero Jake Dixon – who was wearing a special helmet designed with Luca Guintoli (son of Sylvain Guintoli) to raise money for children’s cancer charities – put in a solid ride to come across the line in 9th place, in a five-rider battle for 7th place, but was demoted to 11th post-race for failure to comply with a long lap penalty for irresponsible riding following a crash for Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR – FRINSA – MSI).
Most of the action – and there was a lot of action – was at the front of the race, with the earlier mentioned group of five riders battling back and forth, sometimes making contact, and putting on an excellent show. Canet looked strong at the front – and was on course to finally win the British GP having come 2nd in the last two races at Silverstone – but the four riders with him were hungry for success too. A thrilling final lap saw David Alonso move into the lead of the race, but as Canet re-passed Alonso, Agius sailed past both of them into the lead and was followed through by Moreira, seeing Canet shuffled back to 4th and out of the podium positions at the final corner.
Senna Agius takes his first GP victory ahead of Diogo Moreira, with reigning Moto3 Champion David Alonso becoming the first Colombian to take a podium in the intermediate class with 3rd.
Aron Canet finished in 4th place in spite of having led for the majority of the race, with Guevara, Celestino Vietti (Beta Tools SpeedRS Team), Filip Salac (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team), Joe Roberts (Onlyfans American Racing Team), Marcos Ramirez, and Alonso Lopez (Beta Tools SpeedRS Team) rounding out the top 10. The final 5 points-scoring positions were taken by Dixon (following his penalty), Albert Arenas (ITALJET Gresini Moto2), Zonta VD Goorbergh (RW – Idrofoglia Racing GP), Tony Arbolino (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2), and Jorge Navarro (KLINT Forward Factory Team).
Despite crashing out of the race in the early stages, Manuel Gonzalez holds on to the Championship lead, with Aron Canet’s 4th place finish closing the gap between him and Gonzalez to just 3 points, with Jake Dixon holding on to 3rd place a further 26 points back.

Moto 2 returns to action for the GOPRO Grand Prix of Aragon from 6th to 8th of June.
