Moto2: Marc VDS’ Sam Lowes Tops the Combined Free Practice Standings at the End of Day One in Catalunya.
By Dawn Hammersley
Sam was able to put his best lap in during the first Free practice session with a time of 1:44.122
Not the best track conditions at the Spanish Circuit; due to high winds, leaves on the track and overall low grip. For this weekend, Dunlop have brought their two and three allocation rear tyres, this will have a different impact on tyre wear and race pace compared to last week in Misano.
Sky Racing Team’s Luca Marini finished second overall and showed a strong pace in Free Practice Two, his teammate Marco Bezzecchi also showed a strong pace, as he briefly led the second Free Practice session. Enea Bastanini had a quiet Friday, but was able to be in the top 14 at the end of the day.
Red Bull KTM’s Jorge Martin makes his return in Barcelona, after having to miss out on the previous two races due to a positive Covid-19 test; in Free Practice One he was able to do a lap that put him in ninth position overall, But in Free Practice Two he struggled and finished the day in 12th position. ONEXOX TKKR SAG TEAM’s Remy Gardner also made his return after his injury in the San Marino GP warm up session; Remy crashed at turn two during Free Practice Two but was not injured, however he currently sits in P20, and so has some work to do in Free Practice Three to get inside the top 14 – to get into Q2.
NTS RW RACING GP’s Bo Bensneyder finished overall in 11th position which is a vast improvement to the results he has had this year. Petronas Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge finished third in Free Practice Two and was able to get himself into eighth position in the combined standings. Britain’s Jake Dixon had a strong Free Practice One session, but his Free Practice Two was interrupted by a small crash in turn two, where he lost the front. However, his times overall were good enough to maintain 14th in the combined timings.
Can Britain’s Sam Lowes continue his form and win his first race in four years?
Moto2’s third Free Practice begins at 10:55am Local Time (GMT +2), ahead of Qualifying at 15:10.
