Luca Marini Breaks Lap Record for Pole

By Dawn Hammersley
SKY Racing Team VR46’s Luca Marini takes his third consecutive pole position.
The title leader broke the lap record in Barcelona this afternoon, with a lap time of 1:43.355. Marini was first out of the box and consistent with fast laps.
MB Conveyors Speed Up’s Jorge Navarro qualified in second place, his best position of the season so far, after having to go through Q1. His teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio qualified in fourth, his best position of the season as well.
Marc VDS’ Sam Lowes qualified in third position, keeping up his run of form this year on the Kalex; he is still winless so far in 2020, could that change on race day tomorrow?
Petronas Sprinta Racing’s Jake Dixon had his best qualifying position in his Moto2 career so far, qualifying in fifth position, making the best of his time in Q1. The Brit got his best race position in the Moto2 class last weekend, finishing in sixth position. Teammate Xavi Vierge qualified in ninth position, only one row below Jake.
Tennor American Racing team’s Joe Roberts also made good use of his time in Q1 to get a seventh position on the grid. Alongside him is Marcus Ramirez, who was able to get his best qualifying position of his rookie season, can he convert it into a best finish?
The man currently second in the championship Enea Bastianini will start from tenth position, heading the fourth row; he will need to be strong on the opening laps if he wants to retake the championship lead from poleman Marini.
ONEXOX TKKR SAG TEAM’s Remy Gardner will start in 16th position, after his six-place grid penalty received in Friday’s second Free Practice session. Jorge Martin, on his return, will head the fifth row of the grid. The Spaniard has struggled in the hotter conditions, so with the temperature being lower for tomorrows race, the man should hopefully be more competitive.
Can the Italian Luca Marini take his third win of the season, and extend his championship lead over Enea Bastianini? Find out when the lights go out tomorrow at 13:20 (GMT +2)
