Moto2: Fabio di Giannantonio Breaks Lap Record to Top FP3 in Aragon
By Dawn Hammersley
The Free Practice Three session was delayed for one hour from the original schedule due to low track temperatures. This meant that riders were able to improve their times from Friday in Free Practice Three.
Fabio di Giannantonio, who topped the combined standings on Friday, continued his lightning pace to break the lap record, setting a 1:52.171. Fabio returned to form in Catalunya and after having a nasty crash at Le Mans, now looks set to fight for his second pole position in his Moto 2 career.
Sam Lowes was blistering out of the box this morning setting fastest lap after fastest lap and set what was the fastest lap time of the weekend until Fabio beat it later in the session. Sam had another crash, this time at turn 14, he was ok and looks to fight for his first pole position of the season.
Augusto Fernandez was struggling outside the top 20, but he was given a tow from his teammate Sam Lowes and he was able to finish in fourth position and will be in Q2. Augusto has been inconsistent over the season but looks to finding the consistency as he looks to battle for the first two rows.
Marco Bezzecchi was one of two riders to not improve in Free Practice Three, but he had put in a lap time good enough on Friday to finish in eighth overall and he’ll be looking to be ahead of his championship rivals and fight for the front row in qualifying.
Luca Marini was outside of the top 14 for most of the Free Practice Three session, but the championship leader was able to improve his lap time to finish in 12th, just managing to secure himself into Q2. Luca was the lowest out of the four championship contenders, can turn that around in Q2?
Enea Bastianini also improved his lap time from Friday to finish the session in tenth place. Enea has struggled in the past two rounds but looks to try and remount a challenge for the championship and will need to be on the front two rows to fight for the race win on Sunday.
Who will claim pole position at 15:50? (GMT+2)
