Moto2: Enea Bastianini Tops Friday Free Practice in Mixed Conditions
By Jack Hammersley
Enea Bastianini was able to make best of the conditions to set the fastest time of the day at the end of Free Practice Two.
It was a wet Free Practice One and a dry racing line for Free Practice Two for Moto2 today. Championship leader Sam Lowes had a strong day in the mixed conditions, finishing in sixth and second position in both sessions, and claiming second position overall. Sam had a small crash at turn eight at the end of the session which meant he couldn’t improve on his lap time, but is currently in a vital Q2 position, should tomorrow mornings Free Practice Three be in wet conditions. The Brit will be looking to improve further to claim a third successive podium.
Marco Bezzecchi had a quiet day, finishing in tenth position overall. In the wet, Marco was competitive, finishing in fifth position – the highest of all the championship contenders. But, in the drying conditions, he wasn’t as strong and ended the session in tenth position. He’s currently in Q2, but will need to improve in the dry track conditions to keep his championship hopes alive.
It’s not been a better day for Luca Marini, either, with the Italian – who currently lies third in the championship – finishing in 28th position in the wet Free Practice One and then taking 15th in Free Practice Two; meaning he’s currently going to have to go via Q1 for the second successive weekend. Luca will be hoping for dry track conditions for Free Practice Three tomorrow.
Joe Roberts showed great pace in the mixed conditions, just like he did in Le Mans. Joe’s pace in the wet conditions wasn’t as strong, running in eleventh position. The American claimed three pole positions this year, with one podium finish at Brno. Will Joe be able to take his fourth pole position of the season tomorrow?
Simone Corsi has had a very consistent day onboard the Forward Racing MV Agusta, finishing in ninth and eighth in both Free Practice sessions. The MV Agusta proved strong in last year’s race at Valencia, with Stefano Manzi claiming a front row and fourth-place finish. Fans wonder if Corsi will use his 19 years of experience to get the MV Agusta‘s best result of the season, which is currently ninth position at the Andalusian Grand Prix.
Jake Dixon has been declared unfit for the European Grand Prix this weekend, due to a fractured wrist sustained in Free Practice Two. This will ultimately halt the Petronas Sprinta Racing rider from trying to claim his maiden podium by the end of the season.
Free Practice 3 will start at 11:55 Local Time (GMT +1)
