David Alonso’s winning ways continue as he wins after a last lap battle with Jaume Masia and Deniz Öncü.
Leopard Racing’s Jaume Masia was on pole position for the Misano Moto3 race, Ayumu Sasaki lined-up in second place with Kaito Toba in third place. The weather at the San Marino circuit was hot and humid with no wind.
Lights out and it was Sasaki who lead the field into turn one, the perfect start for the Intact rider. A few corners later Masia took control with Toba running in second place.
Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Deniz Öncü was in sixth place, Masia managed to stretch out a slight gap at the front from Diogo Moreira who was in second place, with Sasaki in third place. Masia’s gap at the front was 1.1 seconds after three laps.
Masia was pushing with 17 laps remaining to the race, Deniz Öncü made his way up to second place and was leading a group of 15 riders! Deniz and Moreira had a slight break from fourth placed man Sasaki. Deniz set a new lap record of 1:41.65, the Turkish rider was catching Masia.
With 13 laps to go Deniz Öncü had a moment with Masia which caused him to lose positions, the KTM rider was now in third place, after nearly running into the back of Masia.
The leading group consisted of seven riders from Masia to Toba, the order stayed the same for a few laps until Deniz and David Munoz passed Masia, Deniz Öncü was now leading. The leading group was now a four-way train from Deniz to David Alonso.
Deniz Öncü was handed a Track Limits warning with six laps to go, not what he wanted to see on his dashboard! Munoz got the better of Masia and was in second place, the Spaniard retook the second place a few corners later.
The caliber of the leading four riders was so high, you just couldn’t call who would take the Moto3 victory. Munoz had a front end moment of which he saved but it put him in fourth place with two laps to go.
It was a hectic final lap! David Alonso won the battle and crossed the finish line to take his third victory of the season, Masia finished in second place, Deniz was third, Munoz was fourth with Colin Veijer finishing in fifth place.
