Moto2: Alonso Lopez Takes the Moto2 Victory in Qatar.

Alonso Lopez Wins the first race of the Moto2 season, holding off Barry Baltus on the final laps.
For the first Moto2 race of the 2024 season under the flood lights of Qatar Fantic Racing’s Aron Canet took pole position, Sync SpeedUp’s Alonso Lopez qualified in second place with Albert arenas taking the third place spot on the front row of the grid. Britani’s Jake Dixon had a nasty high-side during the Moto2 Practice Two session, the CFMOTO Aspar rider was taken to the local hospital for further checks, Jake had no broken bones but was very beat up and declared unfit for the race today.
Alonso Lopez shot off the line to lead the pack of Moto2 riders into turn one, Canet got a poor start and was pushed back to eighth place. Ai Ogura shot up the order to get into fifth place.
Alonso Lopez was leading after lap one, Manuel Gonzalez was in second with Tony Arbolino in third place. Gonzalez took the lead as Canet and Arbolino were battling for third place.
Albert Arenas was putting aggressive moves on Arbolino to claim fourth place. With 15 laps to go Canet made his way to the front of the pack to lead the race, Lopez was in second just ahead of Gonzalez. The leading trio made a break from the rest of the field.
Lopez and Canet were swapping positions at the front with 13 laps to go. Fermin Aldeguer was moving up the order and was in ninth place closing in on Arbolino who was going backwards through the pack. Ayumu Sasaki crashed out of his debut Moto2 race at turn one.
Canet got pushed back to third place as Lopez was leading the race. Canet had Barry Baltus for company, the Belgian rider looked to have more speed than Canet as he made his move for third place. Canet looked to be struggling with his rear tyre with 10 laps remaining to the race.
Baltus made his way into second place and was all over the back of Lopez. With six laps to go Sergio Garcia joined the party and was in fourth place looking to make his move for third place.
Lopez managed to hold off the young RW-Idrfoglia Racing GP rider to take the first Moto2 victory of the season, Baltus finished in second place with Sergio Garcia taking the final podium spot in third place, Ai Ogura was fourth with Gonzalez finishing in fifth place.
