Kyle Ryde held off Glenn Irwin to top the time sheets at Donington Park
The 2024 BSB season kicked off with it’s first official testing weekend at the Derbyshire circuit of Donington park. There was plenty of track action for the test as the British weather managed to stay dry until the Sunday afternoon, although the wind force was strong throughout the weekend.
OMG GRILLA Yamaha Racing’s Kyle Ryde and Ryan Vickers had a strong testing, both riders were constantly inside the top five in all the sessions but it was the home rider Kyle who finished the top rider of the testing after holding off Hager PBM Ducati’s Glenn Irwin in the final session of the day on Sunday.
Honda’s Andrew Irwin finished the test as leading Honda rider with team-mates Tommy Bridewell finishing in fifth place and Dean Harrison finishing in ninth.
Peter Hickman finished top BMW rider in sixth place, team-mate Josh Brookes finished in 13th place. Fellow BMW rider Leon Haslam finished just outside the top ten in 11th place.
Yamaha’s Danny Kent had a solid start to his 2024 season campaign riding the new McAMS Mar-Train Yamaha Racing machinery, Danny finished proceedings in eighth place.
Completely Motorbikes Kawasaki’s new signing Jason O’Halloran finished just inside the top ten in ninth place, young team-mate Max Cook finished in 14th place.
Ducati’s Christian Iddon ended the test in 12th place. DOA Racing’s Danny Buchan finished the test in 16th place, just behind Charlie Nesbitt, Charlie had a big off on the Sunday morning which brought his testing to an end, the youngster was ok just a bit bruised.
Rory Skinner makes his return to the BSB paddock with Cheshire Mouldings BMW Motorrad, the young Scott finished the test in 20th place. Kawasaki’s Storm Stacey and Tom Neave finished in 21st and 22nd respectively.
Top Pathway rider was Alex Olsen who finshed in 19th place, Jaimie Van Sikkelerus was 25th and Lewis Rollo finished in 28th place.
With the first official testing wrapped up the BSB paddock heads to Northern Spain for round one of the championship at the Circuito de Navarra. Prior to round one there is a four day test in Navarra 16-19 April.
Stuart Higgs – BSB Championship Series Director
After what seemed to be a very long winter, it’s great to get the season underway with the official test at Donington Park. We were quite lucky with the weather, so we saw some meaningful lap times put in.
It’s great to see the first evidence of the new technical regulations and new confined choice on tyre material, new liveries, new team and rider combinations, so it’s always a very exciting and motivating weekend.
The lap time performances have shown that there’s a great deal of depth of competition amongst everybody. One small caveat, we did see some rogue lap times, as it was an official test, the full track limits monitoring capability wasn’t in place, so we will get to see more representative times when we reconvene in just nine days at Circuito de Navarra.
Right now the paddock and everybody are packing and we head south. Hopefully we’ll see some of you there and for those that aren’t making the trip; you’ll be able to see all the action live and free-to-air on Quest.
