WorldSBK: Brit Watch – Alex Lowes, on top of the world
By Luke Newman
As World Superbikes begin a two month break before their next race in Misano now seems like the perfect time to review how our British boys are doing, the best place to start this journey is with Alex Lowes.
At this moment Alex Lowes is sitting fourth overall in the World Superbike Championship as the top British rider and the top Kawasaki rider in the WorldSBK paddock.
Nine races into the 2024 WorldSBK paddock and Lowes has two race wins to his name and one further podium. Lowes’ two race wins came at Phillip Island at the opening round of the season in the Superpole Race and Race Two.
After leaving Phillip Island on top of the pile leading the Superbike Championship Lowes went to Catalunya full of confidence. However, Lowes’ results at the Kawasaki Racing Teams home race were not the same as in Australia.
In Catalunya Lowes finished sixth in Race One and Race Two but got his best result of the weekend in fifth place in the Superpole Race. After this round Lowes fell down the order to sit third in the Championship standings.
At the most recent round of the World Superbike Championship in the Netherlands in Assen Lowes returned to the podium. In the opening race at Assen Lowes finished fifth place and then got a third place in the Superpole Race. Until disaster struck in the final race of the weekend when Lowes crashed out of the race in an incident with former team-mate Jonathan Rea.
Going into the two month break Lowes finds himself fourth overall, only thirty points behind Alvaro Bautista at the top of the table.
