2024 Moto3 Champion David Alonso shows his class in a last lap battle to his 12th win of the season
Australian rider Joel Kelso was on pole position for the Moto3 Thailand Grand Prix, Collin Veijer lined-up in second place with Leopard Racing’s Angel Piqueras qualifying in third place. It was sketchy conditions for the Moto3 race, it was shortened to just 12 laps. The tyre choice was a difficult one for sure!
Joel Kelso lead the field into turn one, all riders got around the first few corners safely. Britain’s Scott Ogden lost a few positions and was in 12th place. A front pack of five broke away from the rest of the Moto3 field after two laps.
Veijer took the lead from Kelso, Piqueras was in third place. The leading group was now a freight train of seven riders after three laps, from Veijer to Adrian Fernandez.
The whole of the field were on slick tyres apart from Britain’s Eddie O’Shea, spots of rain were dropping around the Thailand circuit.
David Alonso took a turn to lead the race on lap five, the second group of riders were catching the leading group.
Things were getting feisty at the front as Kelso was pushed off track. With seven laps to go another change at the front as Taiyo Furusato lead the race. Luca Lunetta was the fastest rider on track whilst running in eighth place.
Ogden was in tenth place, a solid ride from the young British rider. Alonso took control of the race once again with four laps to go.
Leopard Honda team-mates Piqueras and Fernandez clashed and both riders were down and out of the race at turn eight.
Last lap time as it was a scrap for the victory, Alonso stamped his authority to lead the way. Alonso crossed the line to take the win, Lunetta was second, Veijer was third, Ivan Ortloa was fourth, Furusato finished in fifth place even though he crashed as he crossed the finish line.
