MotoGP: The PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia Gave us Three Thrilling Races in all Three Classes
By Dawn Hammersley
Sepang delivered the goods as the MotoGP Grand Prix Race was full of action
MotoGP
Pecco Bagnaia was on pole position with Jorge Martin lining up in second place. From lights out the two championship rivals were dicing it out at the first few corners until the red flag was brought out due to a crash involving KTM’s Jack Miller and Brad Binder and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo.
The race was restarted and yet again the two championship rivals were going head to head at each corner of the Sepang circuit! The action was tense but thrilling at the same time. Pecco needed to make amends for his mistake in the Sprint Race, the championship rivals passed each other numerous times over the opening four laps, the Italian rider just had the edge over Martin and lead the race.
Pecco managed to put a couple of seconds between himself and Martin by the half way stage of the race. Marc Marquez was in third place until he crashed out which promoted Enea Bastianini to third place. Both Enea and Marc are battling it out for third place in the championship.
Bagnaia crossed the line to take the all-important victory! The title will now go down to the wire at the season finale in Barcelona. We send all our thoughts to Valencia at this very difficult time.
Moto2
Celestino Vietti was quickest off the mark, the Italian rider was still holding an injury but it didn’t seem to be getting in his way as he continued to lead the race. Jorge Navarro was standing in for the injured Joe Roberts and was putting in a sterling performance, as was youngster Izan Guevara. Britain’s Jake Dixon had late race pace and got into third place.
Vietti crossed the line to take the victory, Jorge Navarro finished in second place, Dixon made a mistake on the penultimate lap which promoted his team-mate to third place, KTM’s Deniz Oncu finished in a solid seventh place, Aron Canet was eighth.
Moto3
Aspar’s David Alonso once again showed us why he has been crowned the Moto3 2024 champion, the young Columbian rider crossed the finish line to take his 12 + 1 victory. Some of the Honda riders had technical issues during the race, both Leopard Racing’s riders both had to retire from the race.
Alonso crossed the line for another victory, Taiyo Furusato finished in second place, Jose Antonio Rueda was third. MLav Racing’s Eddie O’Shea finished in 16th place, just outside of the points.
