MotoGP: Pecco Bagnaia Takes Victory in Texas After Marc Marquez Crashed Out

By Jack Hammersley
Pecco Bagnaia brings home his first win of the season following a mistake from Marc Marquez with Alex Marquez taking the championship lead
It was very tricky conditions on the grid with little drizzle coming down and it was declared a wet race, parts of the track were dry and others were greasy and wet and Fabio Quartararo had gone down on slick tyres on the sighting lap at turn three.
The start was delayed after Marc Marquez and several other riders ran into pitlane to change to their dry bikes with Maverick Vinales asking for his bike at the pitgate. All riders after the delay decided to start on slick tyres. Also the race distance was reduced from 20 laps to 19.
Marc Marquez started from pole position at one of his favourite tracks in one of his strongest conditions, Fabio Di Giannantonio was second and Alex Marquez rounded out the front row. Pedro Acosta headed the second row ahead of Franky Morbidelli and Francesco Bagnaia who took the holeshot in yesterday’s Tissot Sprint race and Jack Miller who’s known for being strong in mixed conditions started in ninth.
The lights went out and it was Marc Marquez who took the holeshot ahead of his brorhter Alex and Pecco Bagnaia. Pecco attacked Alex Marquez twice at turn 11 and 12 but the Spaniard remained in second. Miller was up to fifth place dicing with Morbidelli.
There was great battle between Acosta, Brad Binder and Quartararo for seventh place, meanwhile Morbidelli and Miller continued to swap places with the Italian moving into fifth place. Marc Marquez lead by 1.1 seconds.
On lap four Bagnaia out-braked Alex Marquez into turn 12 to move into second place with Di Giannantonio about one second behind them in fourth.
Acosta lost the front at turn one from the top ten, the Spaniard from Murica is struggling with the RC16 this season.
On lap Marc Marquez lost front at turn four from the lead of the race! The championship leader took too much kerb and the front washed out despite him nearly saving it, he rejoined in P18. This meant Bagnaia inherited the lead with Alex Marquez 1.2 seconds behind.
Despite losing his right foot peg Marc was still riding around and was overtaken by Vinales and Lorenzo Savadori. Acosta retired from the race after running wide at turn 12.
On lap 12 Marc Marquez pulled into pitlane and retired from the race. Binder retired from the race with a mechanical issue.
Marco Bezzecchi was salvaging a poor weekend having an incredible battle with Johann Zarco for seventh place. Fermin Aldeguer was sixth and was the fastest rider on track. The rookie overtook Miller into the final corner with the Australian responding at turn one, but Aldeguer sat him up and moved into fifth.
Enea Bastianini was also one of the fastest on track like he usually is at the end of the race and passed Zarco for eighth and the Frenchman then lost the rear at turn 12. Aldeguer then crashed out at turn 15.
Francesco Bagnaia had controlled the race from the moment Marc Marquez went down and he crossed the line to take his first victory of the season. Alex Marquez took his sixth consecutive second place and takes the lead of the championship by one point ahead of Marc Marquez. Fabio Di Giannantonio took his first podium of the season in third.
Franky Morbidelli held off Miller for fourth place with Bezzecchi in sixth, Bastianini in seventh, Luca Marini in eighth, Ai Ogura ninth and Quartararo tenth.
