MotoGP: Marc Marquez Takes His Tenth Grand Prix Victory at the Sachsenring in an Attritional German Grand Prix

Marc Marquez wins from lights-to-flag at the Sachsenring as a lot of riders crash out

Marc Marquez was on pole position for the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring looking to reclaim his crown as the “Sachsenking”. Johann Zarco was second with Marco Bezzecchi in third. Franky Morbidelli was declared unfit after a crash in the Tissot Sprint so Pedro Acosta started in fourth with Alex Marquez and Fabio Quatararo joining him on the second row. Francesco Bagnaia was starting from tenth place and both Red Bull KTM Tech 3 riders Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini were not riding after being unfit to ride.

The lights went out and Marc Marquez took the holeshot ahead of Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio who was fastest on Friday. Diggia passed Bezzecchi at turn 12, but Bezzecchi attacked back at turn 13 and the Aprilia rider held onto second. Pecco Bagnaia was up to seventh.

On lap two Di Giannantonio passed Bezzecchi and held position, Alex Marquez then passed Bezzecchi at the final corner to move into third. Bezzecchi didn’t want to give up the podium spot and re-overtook Alex into turn one.

Pedro Acosta lost the front at turn two on lap four out of fifth place. This promoted Bagnaia into fifth place who had passed Zarco at turn 12 on the previous lap.

On lap 18 Di Giannantonio lost the front on the brakes into turn one and was out of second place. Johann Zarco then also lost the front at turn one, but on the exit of the corner. Quartararo was now in fifth with Fermin Aldeguer sixth and Jack Miller in seventh.

There was a four way battle for eighth place with the returning Luca Marini, Brad Binder, Joan Mir and Ai Ogura with Marini overtaking both Binder and Mir at turn 12.

Bezzecchi lost the front at turn one and was out of second place. Ogura the following lap lost the front at turn one also and he collected Mir too. Lorenzo Savadori then also crashed at turn one. There was only ten riders still running.

With four laps to go Marini block passed Miller to move into sixth place, Binder then followed suit and overtook his former teammate Miller into turn one.

Marc Marquez crossed the line to win his tenth Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, Alex Marquez took his sixth second place of the season with Pecco Bagnaia finishing in third, the third time in succession he’s qualified outside the top ten and finished on the podium. Quartararo held off Aldegeur for fourth. Marini took his best finish of the season in sixth with Binder in seventh, Miller in eighth, Raul Fernandez in ninth and Alex Rins rounding out the field.

Marc Marquez extends his championshio lead to 83 points over Alex Marquez and 147 points ahead of Bagnaia.
