Moto3: Max Quiles Takes the First Ever Moto3 Michelin Grand Prix of Hungary Victory
By Dawn Hammersley
Quiles won a last lap Battle with Valentin Perrone to take his second Moto3 career win
It was an all-new circuit for the Michelin Grand Prix of Hungary at Balaton Park. CFMoto Aspar Team’s Max Quiles was on pole position for the second time this season. Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Valentin Perrone qualified in second place, with MT helmet’s Angel Piqueras rounding out the front row of the grid.
Lights out for the first time at the Balaton Park circuit, as Quiles lead the field into turn one. All the riders were through the hectic first corner ok. Perrone was in second place, with Piqueras in third place.
David Munoz was making moves getting himself into fifth place. The leading duo were stretching out a slight gap to third placed rider Piqueras.
Ireland’s Casey O’Gorman was running 15th place just in front of Scott Ogden. Perrone made a move to lead the race on lap four, Quiles wasn’t letting go of the lead and retook the position.
Munoz was in third place looking sharp, the young Spanish rider went on to take second place from Perrone.
Ogden crashed out at turn 15 causing Ryusei Yamanaka and Riccardo Rossi to take avoiding action to the gravel, Ogden remounted and continued in the race.
Back at the front of the field Quiles was trying to break away from second placed Piqueras. The leading group consisted of four riders, Munoz was the fastest man on track at the half way point of the race.
Track limits were coming into play for a few riders. Quiles made a mistake at turn 15 and ran wide, Piqueras was now leading, not for long as Perrone took a chance and made a move for first place. Jose Antonio Rueda was now with the leading group with nine laps remaining to the race.
Guido Pini crashed out at turn 11 with five laps to go. Perrone was still leading from Quiles, Munoz was in third place. Ogden crashed out for a second time in sector three, unlucky day in the office for the young Brit.
Last lap time, Quiles was trying his best to pass Perrone for the victory. He made the move and made it stick, Perrone ran slightly wide trying to retake the lead. Perrone went up the inside of Quiles at the final corner but Quiles got the run to the line and beat Perrone by 18 thousandths of a second! Munoz was third holding off Piqueras who was fourth with championship leader Rueda finishing in fifth place.
