AndaluciaGP: Viñales continues to lead Rossi as day one comes to a close

Maverick Viñales has ended the opening day of action fastest ahead of team-mate Valentino Rossi and KTM’s Brad Binder, despite LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami topping the second practice session.

In almost carbon copy to last weekend, the faster lap times came in the cooler FP1 session which saw Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP riders Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi at the top of the timesheets.

Viñales’ 1:37.063 was +0.142s quicker than Rossi’s best effort. Both lap times came towards the end of the opening session after completing runs on the harder front tyre.

Brad Binder impressed once again by completing the top three ahead of Franco Morbidelli and Pol Espargaro, who despite a crash, put his KTM inside the top three in FP2.

Miguel Oliveira goes into Saturday in sixth ahead of Jack Miller and the fastest man in FP2, Takaaki Nakagami.

Aleix Espargaro currently lies in a Q2 position ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.

Joan Mir ended the opening day in 11th ahead of Iker Lecuona and Johann Zarco who improved his time in the afternoon session.

Fabio Quartararo has work to do on Saturday after completing the opening day of track action in 14th with Alex Marquez and Danilo Petrucci trailing the Frenchman.

Francesco Bagnaia remains in 17th ahead of Tito Rabat and Bradley Smith.

Cal Crutchlow and Alex Rins completed the field after completing their first day of action nursing their injuries.

MotoGP returns on Saturday with the final 45-minute free practice session as the riders look to get into the top ten positions and set the order ahead of qualifying at 14:10 local time.
