MotoGP: Yamahas dominate to top spots in cold Aragon FP1

By Short Shift News
Despite two crashes and a scare, Yamaha have came out the blocks quickest in Aragon with sole Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP rider Maverick Viñales topping a cold opening session in Aragon.
The first free practice of the day for the premier class faced a half an hour delay as track officials deemed the circuit too cold after coming to an agreement with Michelin.
Eventually, the session got underway and with just 12 degree track temperature, the times were way off the pace.
Johann Zarco was the first rider to crash out. The Ducati rider lost the front at the downhill turn 14 before nearly being followed in to the gravel trap by pacesetter Viñales, who locked the front of his M1 before putting in the quickest time of the morning.
Alex Marquez, Iker Lecuona and PETRONAS Yamaha duo of Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli all came to grief as the cold Aragon surface caught them out.
However, Yamaha remained in the top spots with Viñales setting the benchmark with a 1:49.866 ahead of Morbidelli and championship leader Quartararo.
Fresh from his MotoGP podium in Le Mans, Alex Marquez took an impressive fourth despite his mid-session tumble finished fourth just +0.310s off the pace.
Takaaki Nakagami made it two Honda’s in the top five with Joan Mir in sixth with leading KTM rider Pol Espargaro pipping Cal Crutchlow to seventh place.
Alex Rins and Aleix Espargaro rounded out the top ten.
MotoGP action returns this afternoon with FP2 getting underway at 14:10 local time.
