Marc VDS’s Sam Lowes becomes the first Brit to win the opening round in Grand Prix since Barry Sheene in 1979

Marco Bezzecchi took the holeshot from fourth on the grid and lead the race until Sam Lowes outbraked the SKY Racing VR46 rider into turn one on lap three. Sam managed the gap to second place as his rivals swapped and fought for the podium positions and brought home a popular win, could this be the start to a championship winning year for Sam?

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Remy Gardner had a poor start falling to seventh place, but managed to make his way through the field and get himself up into second place and tried to catch the Brit, but ultimately had to bring home a strong second place finish. His new team-mate Raul Fernandez had a strong race, running inside the top five for all the race and from laps four to nine held second position but conceded the place to his team-mate then with three laps to go dropped from third to fifth as Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio overtook the rookie, ending his debut in fifth positon; a very strong outting and will be looking to keep the form up for next weeks Doha round.

Joe Roberts had a fairly quiet race spending most of the race in sixth place in-front of Petronas Sprinta Racing’s Jake Dixon, with both riders starting off their 2021 season campaigns in sixth and seventh places respectively. Jake had to suffer and grind through the pain of his right wrist and will be satisfied with a seventh place to start his season off.

Bo Bendsneyder had a great start from the grid, entering turn one in second place, but didn’t have a strong enough pace to stay with the front runners, slowing dropping down the order but was able to finish in ninth position. So with a race under his belt on the Kalex chassis, Bo will be looking to make a step in terms of race pace for next weeks race.

Rookies Cameron Beaubier and Celestino Vietti had an impressive debut, battling in a seven-man pack coming out second and third in the pack. They’ll be looking to get inside the top ten next weekend with more experience.
