Moto2: Celestino Vietti Wins at the Red Bull Ring

Celestino Vietti takes his first win of the 2023 season, his first victory in over a year.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Pedro Acosta was on pole position for the CryptoDATA Motorrad Austrian Grand Prix. IDEMITSU Honda Racing Team’s Ai Ogura qualified in second place with Fantic Racing’s Celestino Vietti lined-up in third place. Britain’s Jake Dixon headed the second row of the grid in fourth place.

Pedro Acosta lead the Moto2 field into turn one, Jake Dixon made a stunning start and got into second place. Ai Ogura was in third, Tony Arbolino was in fourth place.

Celestino Vietti was looking sharp, he passed Arbolino at turn one on the second lap of the race. Sam Lowes and Darryn Binder crashed out, both riders were up and ok.

Ogura made a move on Dixon for second place as Acosta was 0.8 seconds ahead leading the race. Celestino Vietti was still in touch with the leading group in fourth place.

With 16 laps remaining to the race Acosta was checking out at the front, Ogura, Dixon and Vietti were battling for second place. Somikat Chantra was catching the leading group in fifth place. Joe Roberts crashed out at turn three, the American was running in 11th place, Joe was able to remount and rejoin the race. Aron Canet lost the front at turn nine, disaster for the Spanish rider!

Vietti passed Ogura at turn four, the Italian rider was now in a strong second place. Acosta had a 1.5 second lead at the front, Dixon was pushing on in fourth place trying to bridge the gap to the leading trio.

Vietti was catching Acosta with seven laps to go, the KTM rider was given a Track Limits warning, would Acosta feel the pressure in the final laps? Vietti took his chance and made a move for the lead, Vietti just looked so confident as he was controlling the Moto2 race.

Vietti crossed the line to take the win, Acosta had to settle for second, the Spaniard extends his championship lead from Arbolino. Ai Ogura finished in third place, Dixon finished in fourth place, Chantra finished in fifth place.
