MotoGP: Jorge Martin Wins the Sprint Race and Takes The Championship Lead
By Jack Hammersley
Jorge Martin takes his sixth win in the seven races to win in Indonesia ahead of both Mooney VR46 riders
Luca Marini started from pole position ahead of both Aprilias with Maverick Vinales and Aleix Esparagaro. Jorge Martin after a crash in Q2 started in sixth place and Francesco Bagnaia had to go through Q1 and despite setting a lap time good enough for fifth, the reigning World Champion started from 13th.
The lights went out and it was Marini who took the holeshot into turn one but Vinales took the lead at turn two, Aleix Esparagaro dropped down to sixth. Marc Marquez went down at turn 11. Vinales lead onto lap two, Fabio Quartararo was in third holding off Martin who dived up the inside at turn one but ran wide, he tried again at turn ten and again ran wide but made the move stick at turn 12.
Aleix Espargaro tried to pass Brad Binder into turn 16 and lost the front and took the South African with him.
On lap four Martin was the fastest rider on track but had a track limits warning, on lap five he closed in a lot on Marini through turns seven, eight and nine and made a fairly late and aggressive move into turn ten and was into second place. Pecco Bagnaia who was in eighth also was given a track limits warning.
Marco Bezzecchi who had surgery for a fractured collarbone last week was running in fourth place and was holding on to the front trio.
Martin took the lead of the race into turn ten on lap nine, Vinales could not maintain late race pace which is very unlike the Spaniard, Martin pulled out 0.7 seconds in half a lap.
Marini pulled the same move on Vinales at turn ten and was into second place and Bezzecchi was now eyeing up the Aprilia rider, he tried into turn one on lap 11 but ran wide.
Bezzecchi tried at turn ten on lap 12 but ran wide again, Marini was closing in Martin by 0.3 seconds and was 0.4 seconds behind but made a mistake at the second half of lap 12.
On the final lap Bezzecchi finally made the move stick to move onto the podium. Martin took his sixth sprint victory of the season and with Pecco finishing in eighth, Martin was the new championship leader by seven points; his sixth win in the last seven races.
Marini finished in second place ahead of his teammate Bezzecchi in third, Vinales was fourth ahead of Quartararo in fifth. Fabio Di Giannantonio who was searching for a ride finished in sixth ahead of former team-mate Enea Bastianini in seventh and Jack Miller took the final point in ninth.
