Moto3: David Alonso Takes the Moto3 Victory at Catalunya.

David Alonso takes his fourth victory of the season and takes control of the championship standings.

MT Helmets Ivan Ortola was on pole position for the Moto3 Spanish Grand Prix. Colin Veijer qualified in second place, with Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Jose Antonio Rueda qualifying in third place. It was perfect weather conditions at the Catalan circuit.

Lights out at the Catalunya circuit, Ortola lead the field of Moto3 riders into turn one. The first corner was tight for all the riders! Daniel Holgado was in second place, with David Munoz in third place, Munoz had to take a long lap penalty due to slow riding in a previous session.

David Alonso was in fifth place. Britain’s Scott Ogden was down in 22nd place, the young Brit had good pace but crashed during qualifying yesterday, putting him down the order on the grid.

By lap three there was a change at the front Veijer was leading from Alonso. The leading group consisted of eight riders from Veijer to Joel Esteban.

Two laps later Holgado was leading the race, the leading group consisted of 17 riders. Joel Kelso crashed out at turn one, game over for the young Australian.

Munoz was up to fifth place after taking his long lap penalty, the young Spanish rider was making aggressive moves on his fellow Moto3 riders. Numerous riders were being handed track limits warnings!

At the half way stage of the race Veijer and Ortola were dicing for first position, Alonso was in third place, the Aspar rider was settled in third place ready to make his move to hit the front of the pack. The group had 15 riders, from Ortola to Tatsuki Suzuki.

Alonso hit the front with seven laps remaining to the race, the young Columbian rider looked to have just a little bit more pace than the riders behind him. The leading seven riders broke away from the rest of the Moto3 riders.

Alonso pulled the pin with just two laps to go, Ortola was in second place, the MT Helmets rider wasn’t giving up on the fight for victory! Veijer was hanging on the the leaders in third place, Holgado was in fourth place.

Jose Antonio Rueda made his way into third place, there was a four-way scrap for the win, Alonso was still in control at the front. Alonso crossed the finish line to take his fourth victory of the season, Ortola was second, Rueda was third, Veijer finished in fourth place with Munoz finishing in fifth place.

Aspar’s David Alonso leads the championship standings from Daniel Holgado, with just 14 points between the Moto3 riders.
