WorldSBK: Toprak Razgatlioglu dominates Ducati in Misano
By Luke Newman
Toprak Razgatlioglu takes a dominant victory as WorldSBK is back in action at Misano.
This morning Toprak Razgatlioglu took pole position in Ducati’s backyard and told the media that he could win all three races this weekend and the Championship. Ducati were not going to let Razgatlioglu off easy this weekend as Nicolo Bulega qualified in second. Rounding out the front row was the GRT Yamaha of Remy Gardner.
Although many may have thought his confidence was arrogance, Razgatlioglu has proved many wrong this year and this weekend. The Turkish rider shot away from the rest of the field and took his BMW to a dominant victory in the opening race of the weekend. This race win allowed Razgatlioglu to level Noriyuki Haga’s WorldSBK victory count.
Ducati had to settle for a second and a third place as Bulega could only manage to finish in second place as he could not match the pace of Razgatlioglu. Bautista led the Championship coming into this weekend, but a third place today has moved Bautista down to second in the standings.
The top Yamaha was in fourth place as Andrea Locatelli was desperate to get a good result at his home round. Locatelli managed to get a good result behind the BMW and two Ducati riders.
Alex Lowes was the top Kawasaki as he finished in fifth place. After announcing that he would ride for Bimota by Kawasaki Racing next season a fifth place would be seen as a good start to his weekend.
Remy Gardner may have qualified on the front row but the Australian seemingly had bike issues so could not match his early race pace. Gardner only managed to finish in sixth place today. Just behind the Australian was Andrea Iannone on his return to racing in Italy as he finished in seventh.
Michael van der Mark was the second fastest BMW and could not match his team-mates pace, but did manage to finish eighth. Danilo Petrucci put together a stellar ride as on his return from injury he finished in ninth place.
Iker Lecuona returned to the top ten this weekend as he took his Honda back into a decent spot. After a tough season for HRC in WorldSBK a top ten is good progress.
Of the British riders Scott Redding claimed a point as he finished 15th and Bradley Ray finished in 18th. There was a big incident in the opening few laps for Jonathan Rea as he went barreling out of the race destroying his Yamaha. Tarran Mackenzie also had to pull out of the race on his MIE Honda. Finally, Sam Lowes crashed out of the race as well as he lost the front in the second half of the race.
