WorldSBK: Toprak Razgatlioglu obliterates the field at Donington Park
By Luke Newman
In the opening World Superbike race of the weekend Toprak Razgatlioglu takes victory at Donington Park.
This morning Toprak Razgatlioglu claimed pole position ahead of Nicolo Bulega and Scott Redding. The Turkish rider was confident that he would convert his pole into another win for BMW.
After the 23 lap race in the United Kingdom it was Razgatlioglu who took the BMW to another win. This was Razgatlioglu’s fifth win in a row in the 2024 season. The Championship leader beat the field by 11 seconds.
Alex Lowes was the only British rider on the podium. However, before the weekend he wanted at least one of the Lowes brothers on the podium this weekend, something he achieved at the first opportunity.
After qualifying down in 11th place Alvaro Bautista showed that he still has superior race pace, the reigning WorldSBK Champion claimed another podium as he finished third.
Nicolo Bulega took his Aruba.it Racing – Ducati to a fourth place finish after getting beaten by his team-mate late on in the race. Just behind the two Ducati’s were two Yamaha’s, as Jonathan Rea and Andrea Locatelli finished in fifth and sixth places.
In seventh place was the Barni Ducati rider of Danilo Petrucci, with Dominique Aegerter in eighth place. Rounding out the top ten in ninth and tenth was Michael van der Mark and Remy Gardner.
The other British riders in the Championship had horrid luck in the opening race of the weekend. Bradley Ray finished down in 16th place, just outside of the points, with Sam Lowes in 19th. However, Tarran Mackenzie and Scott Redding failed to complete the race. But Redding was running up in the top five before his BMW encountered a mechanical issue.
