Two Drama Fuelled Races Provided Fans With A Scorching Master Class Display From The Current European Talent Cup Championship Leader – BTC Wildcard Marco Morelli.
By Ed Lewis
Race one started with Amanuel Brinton (RS Racing) on pole position besides his European team mate Marco Morelli (Fibre Tec Honda) sharing the front row, but it took no time at all for the Spanish born Argentinian wild card to raise the BTC bar and leave all others standing. Morelli took a big tumble in qualifying but showed no fear of his new surroundings and the Dunlop rubber taking the win by a margin of 11.8 seconds. Behind him was the usual train of BTC contenders. Lap nine events unfolded when Brinton seemed to lose composure on the braking into the club chicane colliding with his championship rival Lucas Brown (SENCAT Talent Team –Mortimer Racing), both took to the slip road, RS rider Brinton high sided on the grass while Brown kept composure to re-join and finish the race in fifth position. Ryan Frost (Fibre Tec Honda) took second, Julian Correa (Microlise Racing) third and Filip Surowiak fourth.
Race two, the bench mark had been set but this one started on a more level playing field as the pack went with Morelli. After all weekend set up issues Brown held the lead on lap one, Brinton took over taking Frost and Correa with him. Lap four the drama unfolded as Frost suffered more bad luck as he lost his gears and his chance to take over second place in the championship. Lap nine Morelli had had enough and checked out and once again took the top step this time by just under three seconds. The red flag came out on the penultimate lap and it was Surowiak and Correa who joined the podium celebrations. Brown took fourth ahead of Brinton which extends his R&G BTC Championship lead to a huge 38 points with 125 points in play at the final two events in 2024.
Harrison Mackay (Wilson Racing) showed he is still a force up front in both races and it was also noted that Scott McPhee (SMP Racing) again took two top 10 finishes, his form improves by the race, could we see another McPhee on the podium soon? As a result of Scott’s performance he is the ShortShift News Rider of the Round for Thruxton.
