MotoGP: Marc Marquez Performs Victorious Comeback at Phillip Island

Marc Marquez wins the Australian Grand Prix with Jorge Martin in second and Pecco Bagnaia in third

Jorge Martin started the Australian Grand Prix from pole position looking to take the double and extend his championship lead over Francesco Bagnaia who started from fifth. Marc Marquez started in second with Maverick Vinales in third and Marcp Bezzecchi who started fourth but was given a Long Lap Penalty due to causing a collision with Vinales in the sprint race.

The lights went out and Marquez had wheelspin off the line and went backwards, Martin took the holeshot ahead of Bezzecchi and Pecco Bagnaia. Marquez was down in sixth after his poor start.

On lap two into turn four Franky Morbidelli tried to overtake Bagnaia but he ran wide and dropped to fifth behind Brad Binder.

On lap four Bezzecchi took his long lap penalty and dropped to seventh behind Enea Bastianini, Pecco was now in second 0.7 seconds behind Martin. On the following lap Bezzecchi lost the front at turn four.

By the start of lap six Marc Marquez made his way into the podium positions, passing Morbidelli into turn one, he was the fastest rider on track and had a 0.8 gap to Pecco.

Martin went wide at turn one on lap 12 and that allowed Bagnaia and Marquez get on his rear tyre. Pecco made his move at turn three, but Martin immediately responded into turn four and retook the lead and Marquez was able to squeeze passed Bagnaia and the world champion had gone from first to third.

There was a three-way battle for fifth place between Binder, Bastianini and Fabio Di Giannantonio with all three riders trading places every lap.

By lap 17 Martin and Marquez were starting to drop Bagnaia with the Italian being one second behind the two Spaniards.

With four laps remaining, Martin went defensive into turn four but ran slightly wide and Marquez took advantage and took the lead of the race for the first time.

Martin passed Marquez into turn one and made it stick, Marquez made an aggressive block pass at turn four and retook the lead from the championship leader.

On the penultimate lap Martin was looking up the inside of Marquez at turns one and two but there was no way through.

Marc Marquez took victory at Phillip Island ahead of Martin with Bagnaia in third. Di Giannantonio finished fourth with Bastianini in fifth.

Jorge Martin leads the championship on 424 points with Pecco 20 points behind with three rounds left.
