Marc Marquez wins the German Grand Prix from lights to flag
It was sunny skies over the Sachsenring for the German Grand Prix which hosts Round 11 of the MotoGP World Championship. Marc Marquez looked to retain his crown as the King of the Sachsenring as he started from pole, his brother Alex Marquez was second with Fabio Di Giannantonio was third. The Trackhouse Aprilia’s were fourth and fifth with Raul Fernandez heading Ai Ogura as Fabio Quartararo rounded out the second row. Jorge Martin was seventh after inheriting two places with Franky Morbidelli receiving a three place penalty for impeding and Martin’s teammate Marco Bezzecchi being declared unfit after sustaining a broken left collarbone in Q2, Pedro Acosta and Francesco Bagnaia completed the third row.
The lights went out and Marc Marquez took the holeshot ahead of Alex Marquez with Ogura in third and Fernandez in fourth. Fernadez overtook Ogura at the end of the opening lap to be third when they crossed the line.
There was a front group of seventh from Marc Marquez to Pedro Acosta, Pecco Bagnaia was beginning to lose touch with the group. Acosta made a dive on Martin at turn one and made it stick to move into sixth.
On lap four Di Giannantonio lost the front at turn ten and was out of the race, the first mistake from the Italian all weekend.
Joan Mir crashed out of 11th place at the final corner, tucking the front behind his teammate Luca Marini. Alex Marquez then made the same mistake a couple of laps later and was out of second place, the two Trackhouse Aprilia’s were now two and three.
Cal Crutchlow was riding inside the points for the first time this season, he overtook Toprak Razgatlioglu at turn one on lap 15, Maverick Vinales was riding in 17th and last position.
Crutchlow crashed out at turn three on lap 22 and was out of the running.
On lap 25 Ogura made a block pass on Fernandez and made it stick to move into second place. Bagnaia was all over the back of Martin for fifth place, the Italian tried to surprise Martin at turn two but there was no room.
Pecco tried again into turn one on lap 26 but Martin just about stayed ahead of the Factory Ducati rider.
Marc Marquez crossed the line to win the German Grand Prix, his tenth Grand Prix victory at the circuit, Ogura was second with Fernandez in third. Acosta was fourth, Martin fifth and Bagnaia in sixth.
