Fermin Aldeguer takes his second Moto2 victory, Pedro Acosta extends his championship lead over Tony Arbolino.
Beta Tools SpeedUp’s Fermin Aldeguer was on pole position for the Moto2 Thailand Grand Prix, championship leader Pedro Acosta lined-up in second place with KTM’s Albert Arenas rounding out the front row of the grid in third place. All eyes were on Pedro Acosta as he could cross the the finish line today as the 2023 Moto2 champion.
Aldeguer got the holeshot into turn one, Aron Canet looked to have made a jump start and was down in seventh place. Acosta was in second place with Marcos Ramirez in third place.
Canet was handed a double long lap penalty due to a jump start. Tony Arbolino was in seventh place, Jake Dixon was in eighth place.
Joe Roberts crashed out at turn nine on lap three. Aldeguer was leading from Acosta, the leading duo were breaking away from the rest of the field. Dixon crashed out at turn three, Celestino Vietti also crashed on the same lap.
Home rider Somkiat Chantra made his way into third place, Aldeguer put the hammer down after six laps and had a 1.3 second lead from Acosta. Arbolino was in sixth place which was preventing Acosta taking the championship title at this point in the race.
At the half-way stage of the race Arbolino was now in fifth place and catching Ramirez. Aldeguer now had over a two second lead at the front of the field. Britain’s Sam Lowes was having a disappointing ride outside the top ten.
In the latter stages of the race all positions stayed the same, Aldeguer extended his lead at the front to over three seconds from Acosta.
Aldeguer crossed the line to take his second Moto2 victory, Acosta was second, Chantra was third, Ramirez finished in fourth place just in front of Arbolino.
Pedro Acosta couldn’t wrap the championship up today, it now goes over to the next round in Sepang.
