By Dawn Hammersley
Joe Roberts held off his fellow Moto2 riders to take his second Moto2 victory after a tough fought battle for the win
It was perfect conditions at the Mugello circuit for the Moto2 Grand Prix. American rider Joe Roberts was on pole position, with Sergio Garcia lining up in second place, SpeedUp Racing’s Alonso Lopez qualified in third place. Due to a red flag situation in the Moto3 race the Moto2 Grand Prix was now over 12 laps.
Joe Roberts shot off the start line to get the holeshot into turn one, Ai Ogura started from 12th place and got into fourth after two corners.
Roberts was leading from Alonso Lopez and Darryn Binder, Jake Dixon was down in 21st place, Fermin Aldeguer was in 19th place, the Spaniard was suffering with a neck injury.
Lopez was challenging for lead, Aldeguer crashed out at turn four, seemingly being taken out by Jeremy Alcoba, a tough weekend for the SpeedUp rider.
Lopez made a move to lead the race, Roberts got pushed back to third place as Manuel Gonzalez took second place. Filip Salac crashed out on lap six, as so did Binder at turn eight.
There was a six way freight train for the lead from Gonzalez to Sergio Garcia. Aron Canet made his way to the front a lap later with three laps to go. Roberts was fighting for a podium finish in third place, the American wasn’t settling for third place as he made his way back to the front of the leading pack.
Roberts was holding his own and holding off Gonzalez on the final lap, Joe crossed the line to take his second ever Moto2 race, Gonzalez finished in second place, Lopez took the final podium spot, Garcia was fourth with Ogura finishing in fifth place.
