Angel Piqueras takes his first Moto3 victory after taking a double Long Lap Penalty
Moto3 championship leader David Alonso was on pole position at the Italian circuit of Misano. Luca Lunetta qualified in second place, with Ivan Ortola lining up in third place.
Lights out as David Alonso lead the Moto3 field into turn one, a tricky first corner as Jose Antonio Rueda and David Munoz both crashed out, Riccardo Rossi also got tangled up and was out of the race!
Angel Piqueras took the lead, the Leopard Racing’s rider had to do a double long lap penalty due to knocking off Scott Ogden yesterday in Practice Two.
After three laps Ivan Ortola was leading the way from Piqueras and Daniel Holgado. Luca Lunetta and Adrian Fernandez both had jump starts and were given double long lap penalties.
The leading duo of Ortola and Holgado had over a second lead from Taiyo Furusato. Poleman Alonso was in fifth place, just behind Joel Kelso.
Alonso was catching the leading duo, the Columbian was bringing Taiyo and Joel with him. Collin Veijer was in sixth place, two seconds adrift from the leaders. Britain’s Scott Ogden was in 15th place, Scott has shown good pace this weekend but must be feeling the effects of his crash yesterday!
By lap 12 the front group consisted of five riders from Ortola to Kelso. Veijer was 2.3 seconds behind the group in sixth place.
Furusato hit the front with six laps to go, Alonso was in fourth place biding his time to make a move to lead the race. The Aspar rider hit the front with three laps remaining to the race, Holgado was in second place.
Holgado took control of the race, Alonso wasn’t happy to give up on the first position, the two were dicing throughout the penultimate lap! The leading group now consisted of seven riders.
Piqueras was now in second place, what a performance from the Leopard rider! Alonso was being beaten up by Ortola and was punted down to sixth place.
Angel Piqueras crossed the line to take his first Moto3 victory, Holgado was second, Ortola was third, Alonso only managed a seventh place finish.
