By Jack Hammersley
Jorge Martin is victorious in Pecco Bagnaia’s back yard
Francesco Bagnaia started the Misano Tissot Sprint race from pole position ahead of his fellow VR46 Academy riders Franky Morbidelli and Marco Bezzecchi. Jorge Martin started in fourth on the second row and Marc Marquez started from ninth after crashing in qualifying.
The lights went out and it was Martin who took the holeshot into turn one with Pecco Bagnaia in second with Morbidelli in third, Bezzecchi and dropped down to eighth.
On lap three Marc Marquez passed Bezzecchi for eighth place, Brad Binder was the top KTM in fourth place with Pedro Acosta in sixth and Jack Miller in seventh with Augusto Fernandez down in 14th.
On lap four Enea Bastianini out-dragged Binder down the back straight towards turn eight to move into fourth place. Martin and Morbidelli both had track limits warnings.
Bezzecchi lost the front at turn two on lap five, a disappointing end to the Italian’s race. Acosta block passed his future team-mate Binder into turn ten for fifth place.
On lap seven Miller out-braked himself into turn eight and Marc Marquez inherited seventh position.
Nothing could separate Martin and Bagnaia at the front but Pecco could not find a way passed.
Marquez went up the inside of Binder into turn 14 on lap nine to move into sixth place.
Onto the final lap Martin had pulled over a second on Bagnaia, was the world champion struggling with injuries from Aragon? Bastianini tried to pass Morbidelli at turn eight but ran wide.
Martin crossed the line to win the Tissot Sprint at Misano ahead of Pecco Bagnaia in second and Franky Morbidelli who took his first sprint race podium. Bastianini took fourth with Marc Marquez overtaking Acosta on the last lap at turn 14 to take fifth.
