MTHelmets Ai Ogura takes his third victory of the season and moves into the lead of the Moto2 championship standings
For the Moto2 Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini ELF Marc VDS Racing’s Tony Arbolino was on pole position for the first time this season, the Italian rider has really turned his season around for the recent Grand Prix’s. Celestino Vietti qualified in second place at his home circuit, Ai Ogura rounded out the front row of the grid in third place.
Tony Arbolino got the holeshot into turn one, Ai Ogura got into second place. Alonso Lopez crashed out on lap one, losing the front at turn 16.
Jake Dixon made up some positions running in ninth place. Arbolino was controlling the race at the front, putting the fastest lap time in after three laps. Aron Canet was in third place, Vietti was in fourth place, a sluggish start for the Italian home rider.
Canet was the fastest man on track as he made a move on Ai Ogura for second place. Fermin Aldeguer was in sixth place and on the move. Joe Roberts was in tenth place after being knocked about in the first few corners of the race.
After nine laps Canet took control of the race, making his move on Arbolino at turn two. The leading trio had a 1.2 second lead from Vietti. Tony looked to be losing momentum as Ai passed the Italian rider to take second position.
With four laps to Arbolino was closing in on the leading duo as Vietti was also catching the leading group. Ai made a pass for first place but was unable to make the move stick, he made the move again a lap later and made it stick and was leading the race. Vietti was now with the leaders and closing in on fellow Italian Arbolino.
Vietti crashed out of fourth place with just two laps to go at the penultimate corner. Jake Dixon was in fifth place, a good point scoring race for the British rider.
At Ogura crossed the line to take his third victory of the season and to lead the Moto2 championship standings, Canet finished in yet another second place, Arbolino another podium finish in third place, Manuel Gonzalez finished in fourth place, Dixon crossed the line in fifth place.
