Moto3: David Alonso back to winning ways after last lap battle.
By Admin
Round Fourteen of the Moto 3 Championship took us back to Misano, where the current Championship Leader, David Alsono (CF Moto Aspar Team #80), secured his eighth victory of the 2024 season.
It was another battle that went to the wire as Angel Piqueras (Leopard Racing) finished a close and hard-earned second after failing to benefit from the slipstream behind Alonso’s tactical masterclass. Daniel Holgado (Redbull GAS GAS Tech) took the chequered flag in third, but due to exceeding track limits, was demoted to fourth position, allowing Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) to advance and take the final spot on the podium. A very disappointing end for Holgado after such an intense last few laps.
Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia) grabbed the holeshot after perfectly launching from pole, closely followed by Alonso and MT Helmets rider Iván Ortolá. Turn Two caused some drama for Boe Motorsport’s David Munoz, who crashed after contact with Stefano Nepa (Level Up MTA Team). The Spaniard re-joined to complete his penalty but later crashed out again at the halfway point with Ricardo Rossi (CIP Green Power). Very unlucky, as he also had issues the weekend prior.
Being followed closely by last week’s champ, Piqueras, Alonso broke away from the chasing group and overtook the current race leader, Furasato. Lap Nine showed Furasato pulling a move that didn’t play out as he wanted and dropped the Honda Team Asia rider all the way down to 13th, which is where he finished. Aggressive moves were pulled by Holgado, who looked to get back into championship contention and took control of the lead out front of Alonso, and by doing so, set the fastest lap of the race.
In the last few laps, the battle for victory commenced between Alonso, Holgado, Piqueras, and the young Dutchman, Colin Veijer (Husquvarna Liqui Moly). Late moves were pulled by Holgado and Piqueras over Alonso to snatch first and second, but Alonso spectacularly responded with a double overtake to reclaim number one position through the chequered flag, swapping his two wheels for one to celebrate yet another fantastic win on his unicycle!
