
Moto3: Angel Piqueras Takes Victory in the Moto3 BWIN Grand Prix of Austria

Piqueras takes a well deserved victory after a chaotic last lap battle for the victory.
The Moto3 championship is back in racing action after the summer break, it’s Round 13 of the championship at the famous Red Bull Ring in Austria. Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Valentin Perrone took his maiden pole position, Angel Piqueras lined-up in second place, Ryusei Yamanaka rounded out the front row of the grid.
Irish rider Casey O’Gorman made his Moto3 debut, riding for the SIC58 Squadra Corse Team, covering for injured rider Luca Lunetta.
Lights out at the Red Bull Ring as Piqueras got the holeshot into turn one. All were through turn one ok, Maximo Quiles got into second place. Cormac Buchanan crashed out at turn four.
Perrone took a turn to lead the race, Yamanaka joined the party in second place. Casey was in 16th place just behind Scott Ogden.
The leading quartet made a slight break from the rest of the Moto3 field with 17 laps to go in the race. Quiles was back leading the race. Championship leader Jose Antonio Rueda was running in tenth place, Rueda has looked slightly off the pace this weekend.
The leading group had just over a second gap to CFMOTO Aspar’s Dennis Foggia in fifth place. David Munoz was in the second group in seventh place.
With 13 laps to go Yamanaka took the lead from Quiles, Piqueras was in third place with Perrone in fourth place. Adrian Fernandez was in fifth place, leading the second group of riders who were 1.7 seconds behind the leaders.
Quiles took back control of the race, until he ran wide on lap 14, the Aspar rider was now running in third place. Perrone was in second place looking very confident. Fernandez was bringing the second group into play as the gap was now under a second.
Quiles regrouped and was back in the lead, Taiyo Furusato was now in fifth place, just 0.4 seconds behind fourth placed rider Piqueras. Munoz joined in the leading group in sixth place.
Two laps to go as Perrone took the lead in what was a hectic leading group! Chaos as riders touch each other at turn nine, Piqueras was now leading as Perrone was pushed back to seventh place. Munoz was in second place.
Piqueras crossed the line in first place, Yamanaka was second place, Munoz was third, Quiles finished in fourth place, Rueda finished in fifth place.

Rueda leads the Moto3 championship standings from Piqueras, with a gap of 71 points.
